"We do not always remember rightly. And it is part of our human condition that often in our memory and story we are right."..."

Our scriptures take this lesson even further still for they show what happens when we humans do not remember what we know. For our lesson from Exodus for today, “Now a new king arose over Egypt, who did not know Jospeh.” Biblical scholars believe that four hundred years have passed from the lesson we heard last week about God through Jospeh saving the people of Egypt from famine and today’s lesson in which the unnamed Egyptian Pharaoh embarks on extermination of a people. What happened to the memories and the story in those 400 years? What in our human condition collectively happened to the memory that we go from they saved our lives to they have the best land and we want it. From he has a place of honor in our household to people described as animals and insects. How did it get all the way to genocide?"..."Our scripture tells a story of a cycle that repeats itself as we, not only as individuals but as a collective, on a communal scale are Cain who kills our brother Abel. Our scriptures, our God, invites us to as Deacon Micki reminded us last week to speak truth and remember rightly. To acknowledge and own and name and remember and tell the story of our wretched sin. Anything less cheapens God’s grace. Anything less neglects the gospel of Jesus Christ."...
